InstaLove: Jane Down the Lane

Keeping on trend with featuring brands that we're now carrying at Model Citizens, today's post is about Jane Bonia, the woman behind Jane Down the Lane jewelry.

Jane is a born and breed Newfoundlander who started designing jewelry in Montreal, QC.
Starting as a production worker for French-Canadian Designer 'Renee Levesque', Jane eventually worked her way up to Wholesale-Production Manager/ Designer which is when discovered her passion for jewelry design.
After moving back home to St.John's Newfoundland, Jane joined forces with colleague Meghynn Norman to form JaM Jewellery which became a trend around town. Although the brand was starting to gain popularity, Jane decided to say goodbye to JaM and focus on her solo project, and current brand, Jane Down the Lane.
One of the many amazing things about Jane is that she offers free repairs on any and all of her products-no limitations. It's just one of the many reasons her brand is so unique.
In addition to repairs on her own design collections, Jane also does custom designs and special orders. Just something to think about with Christmas fast approaching!
You can find Jane on Facebook and  Instagram. All of the pieces featured in this post are from Jane's current collections which are available at Model Citizens (both in-store and online).

InstaLove: Red Sky by Kerry Lee Candles

Candle scents available at Model Citizens
Hello and Happy Tuesday MC babes! It has been a hot minute since our last blog post, sorry about that. We have been real busy with sales, shopping parties, shipments (try saying that five times fast) and getting the store ready for the fast-approaching holiday season. One of things we have done to get ready for Christmas at MC is introduce our Gift Boutique- a curated collection of Canadian-made products that make lovely gifts for yourself and the people you love. Red Sky by Kerry Lee candles is one such product.

Cedar Rose candles created for Present Day Gifts
These soy candles are handmade in Toronto, Ontario which is where Kerry lives with her wife, Jen, and their dog, Prince Buster. Kerry owns a super cool boutique in Toronto called The Future of Frances Watson and never planned on a career making candles-it happened as all the best things in life do, by accident. Kerry's wife Jen gave her a D.I.Y. candle kit as a "filler" gift (her words not mine) for Christmas a few years ago and that's what sparked her passion for creating them.
Four Elements candle collection
While it's not currently her full-time job, Kerry does want to eventually get a bigger space outside of the city so that she can create candles, and other products, under the Red Sky brand full-time.

According to Kerry, working with individuals and stores to create custom candles (scents and packaging) is one of the coolest parts of her job.

If you're in Toronto you can find Kerry's candles in Likely General, Easy Tiger Goods, The Future of Frances Watson and Token. If you're in St. John's you can find her candles at Model Citizens. If you're anywhere else in the world you can purchase Red Sky by Kerry Lee candles through our online store. If you would like to inquire about a custom order you can send Kerry an email at kerryleebutt@gmail.com), and you can follow her on Instageam here.

Have a great day everyone!

InstaLove: Wildcraft

Continuing with the trend of InstaLove posts about products that are soon going to be available at Model Citizens, today's post is dedicated to Wildcraft (to be fair though, if we didn't love them and want to share them with you we wouldn't be bringing them into the shop!). Wildcraft is a Toronto based company that is dedicated to 100% natural skin care products, which is something we definitely support: it is such a nice change to be able to read an ingredient list that is simple and easy to understand.

Laura, who works at Wildcraft and is the bomb, kindly sent us some product samples and I was dying as I unwrapped each product because everything smelled so good and the packaging is LOVELY.

I've also had a chance to try most of the products this week so I wanted to share with you guys what I thought of them!
What I love about this product is that two of the key properties are that it is supposed to alleviate dark circles and swelling under your eyes, and improve your eyelash thickness-which is really all I want in life. The smell of this make-up remover is mild, slightly sweet and fruity, but you definitely need to shake this product well before you use it to mix the oils together. I only tried the product once, so I didn't notice an improvement in my eyelashes overnight (obviously), but I have to say that I really did love the soothing feeling of it under my eyes.
I wasn't sure how I felt about the smell of this product when I first put it on because the smell of Sage was pretty strong, but it really grew on me quite quickly. I used it as a body moisturizer and I was a little skeptical to the website claim that it is an oil product that easily absorbs into your skin and doesn't leave any surface residue. I have tried oil-based moisturizers before and I've only been able to use them going to bed because they're so greasy. However, I am here to say though that the website claims are true. I used the oil on my feet, legs and arms and it did absorb right into the skin and did not leave behind any grease! I also love that this product is multi-purposed in that you can use it as a moisturizer, as a massage oil to soothe muscle aches and pains and as a bath oil.
I like this serum because it almost has the consistency of Olive Oil so it really feels substantial when you put it on your face, unlike other serums that seem to ghost on your face and not do anything. Plus, it makes my skin feel super soft and supple. According to the Wildcraft website this guy is their heavy hitter for skin renewal and I have to agree, love it.
I'm low-key obsessed with this toner guys and it is 100% because of the spray bottle top. I'll be honest, I have never in my life used a toner. It just seemed like an unnecessary step because I thought that toners were for people with oily skin. However, this toner is absolutely one I will buy when we get it in store because the spray bottle top makes using it really easy (not cotton pads required) and fun. I also love the fact that it can double as a refreshing facial spray you can use around 2-3pm when you get the itch to remove your make up or during a long travel day.
The key properties of this baby are that it's designed to leave your skin feeling dewy and fresh, refine the appearance of pores, reduce puffiness and thread veins and make skin glow.
I didn't try this toner because it is targeted at oily to combination skin, or skin prone to break-outs and my skin is dry and sensitive (extremely dry these days thanks to the change in season), but it's supposed to help tighten pores, clarify skin and reduce puffiness.
Again, I didn't try this moisturizer because it is designed to be a healing cream for skin that is prone to oiliness and susceptible to breakouts, but it does smell lovely.
According to Wildcraft this is their best selling face cream and with benefits including smoothing wrinkles and scars, brightening, balancing and toning complexions, and increasing circulation and cellular regeneration in skin, it's no surprise why. This moisturizer has the consistency of whipped butter and it just glides onto the skin so nicely. I have been pairing this product with the regenerative serum every night for the past week and been loving the results. My skin feels so plump and gorgeous after applying it. Plus, I love the fresh citrusy scent. The only thing I noticed is that my face does feel tight when I wake up in the morning and I'm not sure what that's about, but I will continue using this guy for sure.
This is stuff is called the all purpose salve and it is my absolute favorite product because it is a velvety balm that can be used on anything and everything from head to toe. It is designed to keep rough, cracked skin at bay by providing a smooth layer of protection and it has really been working for me. As I mentioned earlier in this post, I have been having a hard go with my skin the past few weeks because I have been sick, and that combined with the change in season was just the perfect eczema creating conditions. So, in an effort to keep my face from not cracking and flaking (I'm sure you're all very attracted to me right now and I just wanted to let everyone know that yes, I am single and available for dating) I have been slathering this stuff on all of my eczema patches. 10/10 would recommend.

Last, but certainly not least, is the Face and Body scrub (this picture is taken from the Wildcraft website because I actually forgot this product in my shower at home). This guys gets rid of dead skin to leave your skin feeling refreshed, polished and soft. Both my sister and I were really liked this product. I love anything with a spearmint smell and, this might be TMI but, she found that it really helped with ingrown hairs in her bikini area.

So there you have it, the whole range of Wildcraft products that we will soon be carrying and Model Citizens and my opinions about each. If you want to read more about the products mentioned in this post, or the company itself you can check out the Wildcraft website here.  You can also follow Wildcraft on Instagram here.

I hope you guys enjoyed today's post and if you have any questions about any of the products please let me know!

Fashion Friday: How to Style Bandanas

Bandanas were the hottest trend at Cochella earlier this year and the trend shows no sign of slowing down as we head into Fall and Winter. There are thousands of bandana images on Pintrest and you can find them on the Instagram feed of every major style influencer, but you might be thinking "how the heck to do I wear these things?!?" Well, we're here to help! Below you'll find a couple of easy ways to add a bandana into your wardrobe.

The bandana that I'm using in this post is the navy Classic Bandana Scarf from Wet Seal, but you can find similar ones in town at Opal & Onyx, Envy, Garage, American Eagle just to name a few.

My preferred way to wear bandanas is tied onto my purse or bag.
This style is super Americana
You can also roll the bandana up tight and wear it like a thick choker...
...or leave it loose and tie it in the front.
You can also try adding a vintage broach instead of tying...
....or you can wear your bandana on your head to keep your hair out of your face!
Whatever your personal style, bandanas are a fun (and easy!) trend to try!

Thank you guys so much for reading this post and if you're rocking a bandana this fall please tag us in your Insta pic because we would love to see it!

Have a great weekend babes

InstaLove: Cult Atlantic

Happy hump day MC babes!

You all know that we have a serious passion for supporting local entrepreneurs and that is why today's post is super special for us. We are very excited and proud to announce that as of today we are the official home of Cult Atlantic.

For those of you who haven't heard of Cult Atlantic before it is a super cool Newfoundland-inspired apparel and accessories brand. Cult was started in late 2015 by Shane O'Reilly right here in town and it has just blown up over the past seven months. Most recently Cult was featured in an article by The Overcast titled "5 Local Companies Embrace Local Culture in Their Clothes, Patches and Pins" that featured Cult Atlantic (you can read the article here).

Lighthouse Crewneck

Lighthouse Camper Hat

Lighthouse Sticker

TFC x CA Great Fire Patch

In the past year Shane has created five different t-shirt designs, all of which have sold out. At Model Citizens (both in-store and online) you will find his latest design, the Lighthouse crewneck (see above pictures), as well as the Camper Hat, The Funeral Club and Cult Atlantic collab patch and the Lighthouse sticker. Tees will be coming soon though!

The OG design (sold out)

Frig It Training Camp Tee (sold out)

Axes Tee (sold out)

TFC x CA Great Fire Tee (sold out)
Fun Fact: The lighthouse in the Cult Atlantic logo is the lighthouse on the Bay Bulls East Coast Trail hike. Shane took the picture two years ago and that is what sparked the idea for his whole business venture.

We can't sing enough praises about both Shane and his clothing brand but don't take our word about it, come into the store and check out Cult Atlantic for yourselves! You'll find us at 183B Duckworth Street, on the stairs across from the War Memorial in good ol' downtown St. John's :)

You can follow Shane and Cult Atlantic on Instagram here and you can shop Cult merch on our website here

InstaLove: Rebecca Minkoff

Today's InstaLove post goes out to Rebecca Minkoff because she was able to shut down an entire street in Soho for her New York Fashion Week show four days ago. Can you say #girlboss??

The designer herself walking the runway at the end of her show.
Rebecca Minkoff actually did a lot of really cool things with her show this season. The first was that she made the all of her runway clothing immediately available to shop both in stores and online. This is a major game changer for the fashion world because customers normally have to wait up to six months to buy and wear the items they see on the runway. Rebecca used #runwaytoretail on all of her Instagram posts from the show and I think it's a trend we're going to see from more and more designers.  The second really cool thing Rebecca Minkoff did at her show this season was design a number of limited edition jackets with a portion of the proceeds from the sale of each jacket going towards Not On Our Watch, a charity dedicated to supporting global human rights.

Rebecca's collection this season was very much 70's inspired and perfect in every way possible. In case she is reading this, I would like to own one of everything please and thank you.

Rebecca Minkoff is a major #girlboss who is doing badass things in the fashion world and we love that.

You can follow Rebecca Minkoff on Instagram here.
